WHAT WE ARE GIVING IS MORE THAN THE NATURE CAN HANDLE

LOOK CLOSELY,
YOU MAY NEVER SEE THESE AGAIN

Will India still be India without the Tibetan Gazelle? Or the Great Indian Bustard? We all know about the tiger’s falling numbers. But there are other endangered species too, Sunday Times finds out as we mark World Wildlife Week.

Last week’s rare sighting of the bearded vulture was a cause for celebration but the outlook may not be so bright for other endangered species. Sparrows and mynah's are becoming rare in our cities and the list could go on. Many Indians may not even know what they are at risk of losing.
Wildlife activist Belinda Wright says, “Any loss of biodiversity is sad, but it’s not always obvious. Sometimes, we don’t even know what we have lost.” Or are at risk of losing. Here’s a sample:

Sarus Crane | 8,000
Human greed and erratic rainfall have all but sounded the death knell for the world’s tallest flying bird. The sarus is traditionally found in the plains of western, northern and northwestern India. Its highest concentration is in UP. Over the years, wanton construction and agriculture have eaten into its habitat, the wetlands, threatening its very survival. Gopi Sundar, who heads the International Crane Foundation in India, says that if the trend continues, the future will be bleak for the sarus crane. “In 50 years, they will be gone,” he says.
Indians born in 2060 could not rely on seeing a Sarus Crane alive and in the wild.

Tibetan Gazelle | 200
This antelope species, found in Ladakh and Sikkim and endemic to the Tibetan plateau, has seen sharply falling numbers for years. Once found in an area 20,000 sq km large, it now survives in a small 100-sq-km patch. Yash Veer Bhatnagar, a senior scientist with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) in Mysore, says the Tibetan Gazelle is so seriously endangered in Ladakh, it could take as little as one severe winter to render it extinct.
Why is this beautiful animal in peril? Experts say the 1962 war with China, which saw the Indian army coming in from the mainland, dealt a heavy blow to the Gazelle population as its primary habitat, river basins and moist meadows, were encroached upon. Then, it had to compete for grazing ground with the livestock brought in by Tibetan refugees. Reckless hunting added to the problem. Does that mean the Tibetan Gazelle makes the front-page or any headlines at all? No, says Bhatnagar. Unfortunately, no concerted efforts are in place to conserve them. The NCF is trying to raise awareness but more needs to be done.
Indians born in 2010 could not rely on seeing a Tibetan Gazelle, alive and in the wild.

Great Indian Bustard | 400-500
Once commonly found across the Indian subcontinent, this statuesque, ostrich-like bird is a rarity today. Ghatigaon Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh once boasted high numbers but doesn’t have a single Great Indian Bustard today. It’s the same situation in Karnataka and Rajasthan sanctuaries. Asad Rahmani, director of the Bombay Natural History Society, has laboured more than 30 years to save the Bustard. He says the destruction of its habitat is one of the main reasons the bird has become a dying species. This, because the Bustard, a ground-dwelling bird, finds its favoured spots, tall grasslands, disappearing on account of farming, cattle-grazing and unplanned construction. Rahmani insists on managing the grasslands. “Allow only limited grazing during the breeding season of the bustard.”
Indians born in 2020 could not rely on seeing a Great Indian Bustard alive and in the wild.

Gangetic (Ganga's) Dolphin |
Less than 2,000

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) latest report found that the number of Gangetic Dolphins had declined 50% in the last five decades. Less than 2,000 survive today. They are mainly found in the Brahmaputra-Ganga-Meghna river systems in India and Bangladesh. Their numbers are dwindling because they are hunted for blubber oil, which is used as fish bait. Polluted rivers further compound the problem. IUCN member Dr Abdul Wakil, who leads the research and conservation programme for the Gangetic Dolphin at Aaranyak, an NGO, believes the species can only be saved if there is action in concert with the local community. The Brahmaputra still offers hope to the Dolphins, he says, but not the highly polluted Ganges. But wildlife researcher Nachiket Kelkar is more optimistic. “River dolphins are opportunistic and resilient fish predators that seem to be doing well at present even in severely degraded river systems,” he says. But even he agrees that in 40 years, it may be difficult to rely on sighting a Gangetic Dolphin if the trend continues.

Go Green >> Go Vegetarian

Dear Global Friends,

WHAT A SHAME!!

THERE IS NO WORSE BEAST THAN HUMAN KIND ITSELF!!!!
WHERE IS THE GREEN PEACE ORGANISATION???
Even today continues to be made this time of year BRUTAL, Dantesque,
bloody slaughter in the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark .
A country supposedly 'civilization' AND EUROPEAN UNION country.
For many people this attack to life is unknown ,
to sensitivity..
IN THIS bloody slaughter to attend Moz to 'show' entering adulthood (!)
Is absolutely incredible that no one does
A SHIT to prevent this barbarism that are committed against Calderon,
an intelligent dolphin
who has the particularity of approaching People out of sheer curiosity.
It is a festival to them. But It is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! Make DENMARK

Causes of Global Warming

Global Warming is increasing the earth’s average temperature. The Green house gases are the main culprits of the global warming. The green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are playing hazards in the present times. These green house gases trap heat in earth’s atmosphere and thus result in increasing the temperature of earth. The excessive emission of these gases is the major cause of global warming.

The major source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These power plants emit large amounts of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. Coal is the major fuel that is burnt in these power plants. Coal produces around 1.7 times as much carbon dioxide per unit of energy when flamed as does natural gas and 1.25 times as much as oil. The coal gives out eighty percent more carbon per unit of energy it produces as compared to natural gas. Another major source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the emission from the cars and other vehicles. About twenty percent of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the engines of the vehicles. This is true for most of the developed countries. Moreover if sports bike and vehicles that are essentially designed for rough terrain, emit more carbon dioxide when used for general purpose on roads. It is always better to use vehicles designed for city driving on the city roads.

Buildings, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global warming pollution than cars and trucks. Building of these structures require a lot of fuel to be burnt which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The second major greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, which causes global warming, is Methane. Methane is more than 20 times as effectual as CO2 at entrapping heat in the atmosphere. Methane is obtained from resources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel manufacture. Almost in all parts of the world, rice is grown on flooded fields. When fields are flooded, anaerobic situation build up and the organic matter in the soil decays, releasing methane to the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide, which is a colorless gas with a sweet odour, is another green house gas. The main sources of nitrous oxide include nylon and nitric acid production, cars with catalytic converters, the use of fertilizers in agriculture and the burning of organic matter. Greater emissions of nitrous oxides in the recent decades is leading global warming

Another major cause of global warming is deforestation. Deforestation is to be blamed for 25% of all carbon dioxide release entering the atmosphere, by the cutting and burning of about 34 million acres of trees each year. Trees collect the CO2 that we breathe out and give away from various other sources, and they give back oxygen that we breathe in. Thus, cutting of trees is leading to greater concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Greater urbanization, requirement of land for factories and buildings, requirement of timber are all reasons that are leading to deforestation, which in turn is leading to global warming.

What is Global Warming

Global warming is caused by green house gases, which trap in the sun’s infrared rays in the earth’s atmosphere, which in turn heat up the earth’s atmosphere. These green house effect warming is called as global warming. The effects of green house effect are visible more prominently in the recent years, with number of natural calamities on the rise in the whole world.

The global warming has happened in the past few years and is evident from the rise in mean temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. The main causes for the global warming are attributed to release of green house gases by human activities. The main gases contributing to green house effect are carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide. The largest producers of these gases are the thermal power plants, which burn the fossil fuels and produce these gases in large quantities. The second biggest sources of these green house gases are the road vehicles and industries.

The global warming has led to increase in mean earth surface temperature and thus melting of polar ice. There are frequent melt down of glaciers that result in floods and other natural calamities. The melting of ice at the poles had led the mean sea level. And further increase in temperature may further melt the ice and lead to further increase in mean sea level, which will engulf low lying countries.

The effect of global warming is very evident on the animal kingdom also. Some animals have become extinct due to loss of their natural habitat or their inability to evolve to the rapid changes in the climate. Also there is a change in their life style because of the changes in the seasons. The migrating birds have changed their time of travel and also their place of migration.

The effect of global warming can be felt on seasons too. There is shift in season cycle, as the summers are getting longer than the winters. This has affected the animals and made them to change their lifestyle accordingly, and those who failed to do so have perished or on the verge of extinction.

The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new diseases. The bacteria are more effective and multiply much faster in warmer temperatures compared to cold temperatures. The increase in temperature has led to increase in the microbes that cause diseases.

Global warming is also effecting the crop production, as the crops are getting destroyed by the sudden change in temperatures or sudden on set of rains. Also the flash floods and other natural calamities affect the crop.

As a matter of fact, because of global warming, the earth’s atmosphere is getting more unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas, which have scanty rainfall or drought in the areas, which received good annual rainfall. The months of rainfall has also getting affected.

But there are some people on the other side of the wall also, they believe that the global warming is a natural process and cannot disturb our ecosystem. The earth’s surface mean temperature was even higher a long time ago, and the ecosystem has evolved from that temperature to this. So it can evolve further. But the changes that are happening now are rather fast compared to earlier times.

Ban Plastic Bags - Save Our Globe

Imagine a world without plastic shopping bags, It could and should be our future. Although plastic bags didn't come into widespread use until the early 1980's , environmental groups estimate that 500 billion to 1 trillion of the bags are now used worldwide every year.

Every year in Washington state, people throw away about 270,000 tons of plastic bags and wrappings. Even though some of Washington's larger cities collect plastic bags for recycling, nearly 5,000 tons of plastic bags went to Seattle's landfill in 2002.
We need to protect our environment and conserve our precious natural resources by saying goodbye to the single use plastic shopping bag and investing in a reusable shopping bag.

Plastic shopping bags have a surprisingly significant environmental impact for something so seemingly innocuous. As well as being an eyesore, plastic shopping bags kill large numbers of wildlife each year. In the water, plastic bags can be mistaken for jellyfish by wildlife. This makes plastic bags pollution in marine environments particularly dangerous, as birds, whales, seals, and turtles ingest the bags and then die from intestinal blockages. Disturbingly, it is claimed that plastic bags are the most common man-made item seen by sailors at sea.

The biggest problem with plastic bags is that they do not readily break down in the environment, with estimates for the time it takes them to decompose ranging from 20 to 1000 years. One of the disquieting facts stemming from this is that these bags can become serial killers. Once an animal that has ingested a plastic bag dies, it decays at a much faster rate than the bag. Once the animal has decomposed, the bag is released back into the environment more or less intact, ready to be eaten by another misguided organism.

Plastic bags also clog drains and waterways, threatening not only natural environments but also urban ones. Plastic bags in drains were identified as major factors in the severe flooding in Bangladesh in 1988 and 1998.

Plastic bags are made from ethylene, a gas that is produced as a by-product of oil, gas and coal production.

Countries that have banned or taken action to discourage the use of plastic bags include Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Italy, South Africa and Taiwan. Mumbai (formerly Bombay),India has also banned the bags. WE NEED TO DO THE SAME.

In the meantime, our best plan of action regarding plastic shopping bags is to REFUSE....At the very least we should REUSE.
